Our Assistant Managers actively help run all aspects of the restaurant, including staff and stock management. This includes the commercial side – analysing sales and financial figures, looking for ways to improve performance and setting new targets.

Training and development

All new Restaurant Management at PizzaExpress have a comprehensive induction. This is an 8 week training plan that covers all elements of both front and back of house. This structured programme is carried out in different restaurants to make sure you get the best possible training experience. You’ll have a mixture of e-learning modules, training guides, on the job training, shadowing and quizzes.

You will cover a range of key technical skills during your induction and you will also cover a suite of Trainee Manager courses that will be delivered regionally by the Learning and Development Team and experienced Managers across the business. These sessions will give you the chance to spend time with other new recruits, helping you establish an early network of colleagues – and make some new friends.

Ongoing training is provided to ensure all management are kept up-to-date with new initiatives and menu launches. This is delivered via our e-learning system, by 1-to-1 sessions, and as a group session in area or team meetings.

We offer a range of modules and workshops to develop high calibre Restaurant Management. Our training is currently going through a process of endorsement with City and Guilds, with the latest phase being the accreditation of our behaviours module.
We also offer a career progression programme, ‘My Evolution’, to develop our future leaders. This provides a track for a Restaurant Manager to progress into an Area Manager position and then on to Operations Management.

Recruitment process

You can search for roles on the Careers section of our website. You should apply online for any vacancy you want to be considered for. The process will take you about 10-15 minutes. If your application is successful, we will invite you to take part in a 20 minute telephone interview, with either a Restaurant Manager or an Operations Manager.  If successful at that stage, we will invite you to a face-to-face assessment. This will consist of a more in-depth interview and 2 restaurant-scenario based exercises.

Prior to this assessment we will ask you to complete some online psychometric assessments – these will show us your preferred style of working and what motivates you in life. We don’t use these results in deciding whether to hire you, but they can be helpful later, forming the basis of your initial career development meeting and ongoing training needs.

We like to look after our candidates. So after you’ve invested time completing the tests, we make sure you get a copy of the results to review at your leisure. We will email your results report, whether you get the job or not.

Finally, we will let you know our decision of course – usually within 5 working days.

Recruitment venues

Your face-to-face assessment venue will vary depending upon where you live. We often use our training academy in Fulham for restaurant vacancies in London and the South East. We also use some of our larger restaurants across the UK and Ireland in addition to hotel business suites. We will endeavour to hold your assessment as close to your home location as possible.

Right to work in the UK

Please bring the following documents with you on your assessment day, as well as a colour photocopy of each that we will keep for our files:
• Proof of your National Insurance number
(i.e. National Insurance Card, P60, a P45 dated within the last 3 months, or a letter issued by HMRC or your previous employer)
• A valid passport, plus colour copies of both front cover and main page OR
• A full birth certificate (if born in the UK or Northern Ireland) OR
• An identity card (European countries only), with copies of both front and back
• Proof of your right to work in the UK
(e.g. a visa, or worker registration scheme letter for European A8 Countries’ nationals only, or Blue/Yellow registration card for Croatian nationals only)
All supporting documents need to be valid and in date. If your name on your passport or other document is different to your current name, please bring proof of your name change (e.g. marriage certificate or name change by deed poll document).To help you achieve your apprentice qualification, you will receive dedicated training from our partners at Lifetime Training. This is ongoing support throughout your apprenticeship. Meanwhile, your in-house training plan will be tailored, specific to your role, and cover everything you need to know.
