Our chilled pizzas are made using exactly the same methods we use in our restaurants. To create the classic PizzaExpress base we start with a simple ball of dough, made to our exacting recipe. This is then is rolled and hand stretched before being placed in a tin for baking. Once baked, the base is topped by hand before being wrapped and placed in its distinctive blue box.
The recipes themselves are based entirely on our restaurant pizzas and wherever possible we use the same ingredients our chefs use day in, day out. On all our pizzas you’ll find the same unique tomato sauce, made with the finest vine-ripened tomatoes and a freshly plucked basil leaf, while on classics like American and Sloppy Giuseppe we use the same tasty pepperoni and spicy beef.
To ensure we get the topping right, we simply take the restaurant recipe and pro-rata the topping accordingly to account for the differing 8” and 12“sizes.
And although we do have to contend with the fact that your domestic oven’s cooking temperature is about 200 degrees lower than our restaurant ovens (200°C vs 400°C) our ultimate aim is to get as close as we possibly can to our restaurant pizza.
Most major supermarkets stock our pizzas although availability can vary from store to store. Of course, if it were up to us, all our range would be available in every store!
Following the fantastic customer feedback on our new Romana pizza bases we have developed a version for you to enjoy at home. Our Roman Etna pizza is now on sale exclusively in selected Sainsbury’s stores. It looks very different so keep an eye out!
